Photo, Video and Drone

WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW TO SEE ALL THE GEAR WE USE AND OUR HOT TIPS FOR WHAT YOU NEED ON YOUR TRAVELS…….

Have you ever wondered what camera gear we use on our travels??? What GoPro attachments, which drone, what video editing software????

When we were about to head off on our trip, we honestly thought we would just use our iPhones for photos. After the first few month soon the road we decided to get a decent camera. I would have been so disappointed if we hadn’t of and had only iPhone pics to look back on…

So our advice to you is, buy a good camera. It will be the best money you ever spent and memories for you to look back on and great for your walls at home.

You really do capture some amazing snaps while travelling Australia.

We currently have a Sony A7iii and find it really easy to use. It is such a powerful camera and the quality it produces is amazing. We use this for all our still images and also a lot of scenic video for our youtube series.

Previously we had a Nikon digital that took a swan dive off Elephant Rocks while trying to get a family photo on a tripod and a Panasonic G4 which we sold, as well as a Canon DSLR.

A big tip is LEARN HOW TO USE IT!

It will be a game changer and you won’t believe the image quality! We have watched many YouTube tutorials when trying to learn camera settings.

THE DRONE

Our drone came as an after addition, something Justin has always wanted to have and it had started a little hobby for him while on the road. As for picking a drone – do your research and decide on a budget for you.

Our current drone is a DJI Mavic Pro 2 and it was $2500 (money well spent), however, we started off with a DJI Phantom 3 for $1200. It is flown through an App on an iPhone or iPad which is super easy.

Images and video can be transferred through the drones wifi or by an adaptor cable to your phone. Or you can remove the micro SD card and put directly into your computer. It gives our videos and imagery an amazing aspect of how vast and remote some of the amazing places we camp are. For us, it has been integral when creating video content for our YouTube channel.

DO YOU NEED A DRONE???

We think not!! They are expensive, there is a lot of restrictions on where you can fly them and they are really quite annoying. For us, we earn an income through our images and video so it’s worthwhile, but for most travellers we think it would be a waste of money!!

GO PRO ACTION CAMERA’S

We also use a GoPro Hero 9. Gees, these things are awesome, we’ve had a lot of fun with it, especially in the water! For around $500 you can get a compact, waterproof, shockproof & really easy to use camera. They also have the ability to shoot in some really wide angles which is great for fishing and swimming footage. The hyper smooth and media hub is quality and if you’re looking for an all round camera to take on your travels get yourself one of these. Plus the kids can use it and its basically UNBREAKABLE………

LAPTOP AND SOFTWARE

Now the last thing we use and probably the most important is our Macbook Pro and MacBook Air. Sensational laptops with plenty of power for editing high quality video and images. Justin has the Pro and I use the Air. The Pro has better memory and graphics to handle video editing. The editing software is Final Cut Pro which is around $500 to purchase on the app store, but well worth it when creating youtube episodes. If you are starting out we would recommend editing through iMovie or some cheaper software in case YouTube isn’t for you.

These three bits of technology are all we use while we travel to capture our shot and make videos. We know there are a lot of options out there when buying technology, but as you can see from our pictures and video’s, these products do a good job!

OTHER GADGETS WE USE!!

Gadgets – We have a few handy little gadgets. Very occasionally we use the DJI Ronan gimbal for our Sony a7. We bought it before the hyper smooth GoPro so use it very little.
GoPro accessories are fantastic to get certain angles. We use the mouth piece, flex clamp and extension poles as well as a range of other little nik naks.

If you’d like to document your travels we would recommend getting a GoPro. If you are a keen photographer, well there are so many options. We loved our LUMIX GH4 and I don’t think we would ever stray from our Sony – which is a $3500 camera!! We just love it and its perfect for our travels and lifestyle.
