TOWNSVILLE – THE CAPITAL OF NORTH QUEENSLAND
THE BIG4 WOODLANDS HOLIDAY PARK
After some epic scenery up at the top end of Oz, Townsville didn’t disappoint. Justin actually lived here for 5 years in his younger days with his first posting in the Air Force. So it was good to have him for the local knowledge and checking out some cool spots.
We based ourselves at the BIG4 Woodlands Holiday Park which is a 10 min drive just north of town. It’s a huge park with great big caravan sites and amazing facilities for the family. It’s a mecca for the kid’s. The have large chess and Connect 4 to play with. A jumping pillow and a great playground also. The best bit, a resort style pool with waterslide and a waterspray park. It Kept our 3 little ones entertained and cool for hours on end, which was perfect as we have had some stinking hot, humid days while here.
We hit up ‘The Strand’ which is a fantastic place for all. With the many pubs and restaurants it’s very easy to settle in for the afternoon. But, with 3 kids in tow we make our way for the FREE splash playground! The kids had an absolute ball. Lots of kids to socialise with and cool off in this heat and humidity. There’s a great footpath for little scooter riders, a playground and some cool workout stations along the way! The patrolled lagoon is also a great way to relax and avoid stingers in the far north, unfortunately for us, it was closed on our visit.
CASTLE HILL is a fantastic way to get a 360degree view of Townsville and take some snaps. It also has some great tracks & you can run up to the lookout if you’re keen like Justin (weirdo).
REEF HQ – THE TOWNSVILLE AQUARIUM was a great day out for us. At $28 per adult and kids under 5 free for an all day pass, it was such a cool place to visit. With heaps of activities for the kids and some really great interactive aquariums, we had a blast. Definitely check this one out while your here.

Our next stop is Magnetic Island. Only 8km offshore from Townsville. You can day trip from here but we’ve chosen to leave our van on the mainland take the car across on the ferry and stay the night!
Stay tuned for that in our next travel blog.
Cheers – Bec
